Tyre Propagator

Without having money, space or time to erect a polytunnel, keeping young seeds warm is a challenge. Noticing a lot of old tyres in the farm yard opposite my house, along with copious amounts of manured animal bedding I hatched this scheme.

Harvey very kindly deposited a large pile of straw and cow dung in my front garden along with a couple of sizeable tractor tyres. Dave helped move one of them into the back garden. After putting in a plastic ring from one of the silage wraps at the base, I filled the tyre with straw making sure to fill all the way to the edge. I topped this with a layer of wool and then covered it with plastic. This was done on the 19th Feb and by the 2nd March it was feeling really hot. However, a sudden dip in temperatures delayed it being used to warm young seedlings.
